Praise and thanksgiving are closely related, because a heart of thanksgiving always precedes a voice of praise – This action could be towards a person or more importantly towards to God.

The popular celebration of thanksgiving is an expression of gratitude, especially to God.  You acknowledge God’s goodness, praising and thanking Him for all His blessings; Protection, provision, life, love, family etc.

It is difficult to offer genuine words of appreciation to anyone without offering words of praise. An expression of praise and thanksgiving activates more favors to us. For instance, you draw a positive response from praising or commending a colleague for a job well done. This applies to God also, as with every good parent, when you display heartfelt gratitude for good things they have done, they are happy to do so much more.

My family and I recently attended a beautiful thanksgiving service. It was a refreshing experience listening to families share their reasons for being so thankful to God in spite of everything going on the past 18months. We were reminded that there is always something to be thankful for no matter ones circumstances.

The Powerful benefits of Praise and Thanksgiving is revealed in the following scriptural verses;

Benefits of Praise and Thanksgiving from the scriptures;

  1. Proverbs 27.17: “As Iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens another.” Words of encouragement, praise or gratitude build people up (family or colleagues), whilst inspiring productivity. This is better than being unappreciative.

2. Psalm 103.1-5: “Praise the Lord, all my inmost being, praise His holy name and forget not all His benefits” Note the benefits for praising God(1) ‘He forgives your sins and heals all your diseases. (2) He redeems your life from the pit (destruction and death) and (3) crowns you with love and compassion. (4) He satisfies you with good and (5) renews your youth as the eagles (Refreshes and strengthens you).’ Lots of benefits to receive from just having a sincere heart of praise and gratitude towards God. Also, these are freely given If you can believe.

3. Having an attitude of gratitude toward God also makes you humble and less arrogant or prideful. Being humble displays your vulnerability, that you understand your limitations as a mortal being. A humble disposition yields much benefit and makes your life path easier to tread. As these verses reveal; James 4:6 “God opposes the proud but shows grace to the humble”. James 4:10 “If you humble yourself before God, He will lift you up”

4. Thessalonians 5:18 “In everything, give thanks to God” Note; ‘in everything’ and not ‘for everything’ – This means still retaining a thankful attitude even when things appear difficult,  thanking God through this means you acknowledge His greatness and ability to get you through the situation victorious. As scriptures states; 2 Corinthians 2.14: “Now thanks be to God who always makes us triumph in Christ.”

Suffice to say, our ability to extend praise or gratitude to people is beneficial. More so, when this is directed to God.

An important key to overcome life challenges, is the key of Praise and Thanksgiving to God. Try this when you are happy and even when you are not. Burdens are lightened and you immediately reduce the size of the challenge.  Your restored peace and hope will signal to your heart that everything will be just fine.

Blessings 🙂
